CROC Cloud Services Helps MIEM HSE Ensure Uninterrupted Education during Lockdown

Thanks to CROC Cloud, HSE Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM HSE) has successfully switched to remote teaching. Virtual classrooms were deployed within just one week and are now being used every day for the Institute’s entire educational process, maintaining pace and productivity at its usual level.

The Higher School of Economics (HSE) is one of Russia’s online education leaders, delivering 100+ courses to more than two million subscribers on Сoursera alone. However, to shift 100% of its activities online due to the pandemic lockdown, the HSE needed additional computing resources, especially for engineering training.

MIEM HSE student teams are engaged in 200+ real-life projects for industry partners, including the development of new error control coding systems for Huawei, DLP system modules for InfoWatch, a corporate event attendee registration system for VTB, and an object recognition solution for thermal images. Most of these projects require virtual development and testing environments consisting of traditional virtual machines, Docker containers, and Kubernetes clusters1. Moreover, to ensure provision of a full-fledged remote work experience, MIEM needed to create a ‘virtual twin’ of each of its classrooms in a video conferencing system, thus enabling students and professors to ‘enter’ a relevant classroom at the scheduled time. As a result, the load on MIEM’s infrastructure has increased dramatically in recent weeks, with its private cloud lacking the capacity to meet the demands of this large-scale virtual classroom deployment.

MIEM opted for CROC Cloud to quickly scale its infrastructure and ensure ad-hoc resource allocation for projects as and when necessary.

“This format made us reconsider the student/teacher experience, find new ways to interact, and maintain or improve learning efficiency to cope with serious challenges faced by the university community today.
